Bathroom / Relief Center
The Lower Polk Community Benefit District monitors the JCDecaux public restroom located at Sgt. John MaCaulay Park. Not only do we monitor this public bathroom for cleanliness and safety, we also maintain a rest station that offers refreshments and resource materials for jobs, housing, medical care, and other community needs.
The Lower Polk Community Benefit District, through its contractors, also provides the Relief Wagon which is a mobile relief center that includes 2 clean and safe public restrooms, donated clothes when available and a safe and sanitary place to dispose of used syringes. This mobile relief wagon was started in June of 2016 and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week and moves throughout the entire Lower Polk District. It is used approximately 120 times daily.
The combined implementation of the staffed JCDecaux bathroom and the mobile relief center have caused a large drop in human waste and improperly disposed of needles in the neighborhood. Throughout the Lower Polk CBD human waste 311 calls are down by 34% (2015 vs. 2016). Likewise 311 needle reports in the Lower Polk CBD are down a whopping 58% (2015 vs. 2016).
